Another great use for Garlic
Summer is coming, and if you have pets, it’s time to prepare! I’m not sure about the rest of the country/world, but the last two summers in Upstate New York have been absolutely HORRIBLE for fleas!! Even the vets were having trouble controlling them with the best medications at their disposal. While it’s not 100% effective, GARLIC is an amazing and simple aid in the battle.

Yes, I know I’m a little off my normal track here – but it is a useful bit of knowledge nonetheless. Fleas do not like garlic. People who eat garlic on a regular basis are less likely to be bitten by fleas; the same goes for animals. There are many supplements in pet stores and health food stores – prices range dramatically. I have two cats and a dog, Shadow. While that guy will eat just about anything I offer to him in a “happy voice”, the cats are typical. They are finicky wink Each will only eat a specific brand – two different ones, and you guessed it – the most expensive ones. So I found a partial remedy for both the fleas and my pocketbook – I make my own. I’ve modified this recipe from The Grovehill Gang for dog biscuits for this very purpose. By substituting about a half cup of Brewer’s Yeast for some of the flour, and measuring a “tad” of garlic powder as a full Tablespoon, I’ve got a “vitamin” that my ‘kids’ will all eat most of the time. (And of course, I use beef broth instead of water and bouillon)! When I have it, instead of just using cooking oil, I use oil from a tuna fish can, or chicken or beef or even bacon drippings – they like these better, of course… If I don’t have any in reserve, a little peanut butter adds a little more flavor as well. I try to make these once a month for my crew – of course I cut them into smaller pieces so they last… I still keep a bottle of the supplements around, but knock on wood, last season flea season was manageable! Wishing you a flea-free season as well wink
